Brilliant, Lori. I really admire your courage on Wall Street.

I don't have a winter coat either. :( And I walk to work...

I am from Costa Rica and of course we are affected. We are always affected by the whims of the US. But who cares about us? We are brown and not US citizens. Should the US care about the effects they produce on small nations like Costa Rica?

You are right Designer. Today's unemployment rate was changed to what is called "U3" back in 1986 from "U6" which is all forms of unemployment.

The break down is:
U1: Percentage of labor force unemployed 15 weeks or longer.
U2: Percentage of labor force who lost jobs or completed temporary work.
U3: Official unemployment rate per ILO definition.
U4: U3 + "discouraged workers", or those who have stopped looking for work because current economic conditions make them believe that no work is available for them.
U5: U4 + other "marginally attached workers", or those who "would like" and are able to work, but have not looked for work recently.
U6: U5 + Part time workers who want to work full time, but can not due to economic reasons.

So today U6 rate is at 11.8%. The highest it has been since they started to record this rate (in 1942) was 9.7% in 1982.

You indicate the US jobless rate is 6.5%. But it's probably worse than that. Because the figures are fudged these days, because now they dont' take into account the self-employed, underemployed. I bet it's at least 10%. Poor Jimmy Carter, got accused of creating a 'bad' economy, when the rate more truthfully reported was probably lower in true terms than it is today. Also, 20% of cities have not seen a drop in real estate values. I wonder which places those are. Either they were so down to begin with, so they couldn't go down any further, or they're just a few of the places in America with good economies?

I'll take one of those coats, but you will have to deliver. What we need to consider is that the real estate market created this mess, indirectly. The real estate market can take us out of this mess, 5 million foreclosures are alot, but why or how do we get government to allow investors to purchase these properties? They will take us out of this but they aren't allowed right now.

This is some classic alternative news reporting right here for you. I thought I’d hit the streets to ask people how they are handling the global economic recession, and the responses I got were a whole lotta fun. Most people are starting to cut back in sensible ways, like going out to eat less or not buying crap they don’t need. And hey, we could use less crap on the planet anyway, right? So that’s one positive about the recession, right? Ok, so yes, it really sucks that people are losing their homes and many are having trouble putting food on the table. I’m having a really rough time of it right now myself. But the bottom line is, if we reach down within us deeply, we can usually find stores of energy and resources that we hadn’t yet tapped into. And there is something really beautiful about that, I think. I’m not going to say that the recession is a good thing, even though I’m tempted to for reasons like we don’t buy so much crap and that’s better for the environment and blab la bla. But I will make this funny video to lighten the mood for a little, and to remind people that they can and will survive. Godspeed people. [More] [Less]
